I. Main Historical Facts
Indonesia has been inhabited for 500,000 years ago by the “Java Man”, a form of Homo erectus. Later, came the Papuans, who was followed by the Malays, Javanese and Polynesians.
In the sixteenth century, the territory was occupied by the Majapahit Empire. Soon came the Muslims.
When Europeans arrived in the early sixteenth century, settlers colonized the country, it was precisely the Portuguese and Dutch. They established the East India Company, with which imposed a trade monopoly in spices, sugar and coffee.
By the early twentieth century, the population began to rebel against colony. Indonesia has a large ethnic variety as are 365 different groups that comprise it. Among the most important are the Javanese with 45% of total population, 14% of Sundanese, Madurese 7.5%, Malays as a density of 7.5% of the population, and 26% from other cultures.
While the predominant languages in Indonesia are Indonesian and English has more than 583 different dialects, the result of its cultural variety. Also 87% of Indonesians profess Islam while 9% is a Christian and 2% to Hindu traditions.
