Wild and beautiful, Scotland is located in Northern Europe, bordering the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and England.
Its domains extend from the farmland in the south and east to the famous ‘Highlands’ or spectacular highlands and islands in the west, where the rugged coast lies beautiful beaches and rises to mountains lonely, broken only by sparkling lakes and deep rivers.
This ancient land of brutal history, dotted with ancient castles and fortresses, is almost the same size as England, although most of its area consists of plateaus, mountains and about 800 islands.
As an old Scottish proverb “good things come in small packages.” And despite its small size, Scotland certainly holds many treasures for all tastes.
For the history buff, few cities are compared with Edinburgh and Glasgow, while gourmets can not fail to try the Haggis, Aberdeen Angus beef and smoked salmon in Dumfries and Galloway.
For those who prefer a good drink, the single malts from the islands of Islay and Oban are unparalleled. And if you love nature you will find mountain landscapes, sparkling seas and islands cold wild.
Integral part of Britain since 1707, Scotland has maintained a separate and distinct identity in the last 300 years. Today, most tourists have definite expectations about what they will find.
Scotland mention conjures up images of tartan kilts, bagpipes, clans, the Monster of Loch Ness, castles, lonely, wool, golf, sheep and the landscape of the Highlands, all covered by a seemingly endless rain.
And while all this is actually part of the Scottish scene, however there is much more to see and experience – in fact the climate is rarely as bad as its reputation.
