Routes and travels in the land of the fire, Argentina, America the South
Tierra del Fuego is islands of the South Atlantic and Antarctic Argentina land of fire is the southernmost province of the Argentina Republic. It is an archipelago located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, about 22,000 km² and about 70,000 inhabitants (1991).
Land of the fire is separated from the Mainland by the mythical Strait of Magellan that communicates both oceans and that, before the creation of the Panama Canal, was only passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Many sailors at the time of the discovery attempted to cross it, dodging its angry waters, but few which did not attain any damage. History the first to reach the area was Ferdinand Magellan in 1520, which gave the name of Tierra del Fuego to the area, impressed by the large number of fires which divisaban in the territory surrounding which met the indigenous people of the area, the Onas, the Yaganes, the Alacaluf and the Haush. During the next three hundred years, expeditions from many nations of the time (English, French, Portuguese, etc.)
Visited the area, that they used the Strait that Magellan discovered and which bears his name, to move into the Pacific Ocean and from there to East Asia, in search of the desired route of spices. Until that, in 1826, Fitz Roy discovered the Beagle Channel. Until this zone also became the naturist Charles Darwin, brought in one of the journeys of Fitz Roy.
The Spanish tried unsuccessfully to colonize the area, an extremely hard climate, but it was the Anglican Thomas Bridges who resettled in the area of the Beagle Channel towards 1869.
In 1884, an expedition argentina commanded by Commodore Augusto Lasserre came to the area and founded a sous-préfecture on October 12, under the Government of Buenos Aires to place control and laying the foundations for the present capital of the province, taking the same name given the native to the place: Ushuaia (Bay looking to the West). By 1943, the central Government of Argentina created the maritime Government of Tierra del Fuego. In 1955 there was an attempt to turn the area into a new Province called Patagonia, but it could not be achieved. In 1957 the Government created, by Decree of the National Executive, the national territory of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur, always dependent on the central power. This national territory also included the Falkland Islands, illegally occupied by England since 1833. In 1986, the legislature approved to turn the area into a new province, but the Act which was not introduced until 1990, and the following year was compiled, in Ushuaia the magna carta of the province.
In this archipelago, discovered by Magellan in 1520, is the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, on the shores of the Beagle Channel. The geography is mountains, reaching one of its peaks up to 2700 m in height. These peaks are part of the Andes, which serves, Furthermore, limit with neighbouring Republic of Chile. Rio Grande, is another important cities located more to the North. Another of the attractions of the area is the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, which is usually called the lighthouse at the end of the world, was named in the work of Jules Verne, although that referred the writer, truly, it is in the island States, also in this province.
It is an area of sheep, but at the end of the 20th century, and thanks to granted industrial developments in the area, many industries, mostly related to household appliances were installed. Today (2004) many of these industries have disappeared in line with the economic tragedies affecting the country since the beginning of the 21st century.
