How to get to Füssen?
To make the journey from Munich to Füssen we use as a transport train. Trains depart from the Hauptbahnhof (central station) each approximately 1 hour and the trip takes 2 hours.
As our disposal ticket Interrail Global Pass / Eurail, and because it was a regional train (RE), we did not pay anything for the trip, nor had to make any reservations, it was enough to jump on the bandwagon and nothing more. In the case of not having a ticket Interrail / Eurail, you must pay a ticket for € 20.80. (If you want more information about using Pass Interrail / Eurail see previous post: Trains: InterRail – Eurail).
The city is very small, so most of the trips can be done on foot.
Without doubt the most recommended trip is to visit Füssen Neuschwanstein Castle. Is about 3 km away from downtown Füssen so if you want (and weather permitting, for when we were raining and cold), you can walk. If you’re a little lazy, you can take a bus near the train station. I used the lines 73 and 78 and you you have to get off at Hohenschwangau. Again, if you’re a bit lost, I continued to tourists.)
The entrance to visit the castles Hohenschwangau purchase, before climbing up to the castle. To climb, you can go on foot but are like 40 minutes uphill, or ride horse-drawn carriage, or go by bus (the rise and fall leaves in total about 3 €). The cars are more expensive than the bus.
In turn, to buy a ticket, give you an entrance time for your visit, which for more than a lot of people, saves you from having to be standing in line, because as you can go see other things.
Lastly, while you wait your turn to visit the castle, I recommend you walk up to Marienbrücke, which is a bridge from which you can get the best views of the castle, the Alps and a river with a small waterfall that runs under this bridge! Simply amazing! Only 5 minutes walking … (The previous photo was taken from the Marienbrücke).
Accommodation in Munich and Füssen
In Munich, as mentioned earlier, for travel during the Oktoberfest, you should take extra care and seek early enough to have a place to stay, as it is considered high season.
In Füssen, the problem is that there are very few hostels, which also must look to something in advance to avoid running out of place.
Here you can find accommodation in these two cities.
Hi! I’m interested in the price of the Neuschwanstein Castle. Can you tell me how much does it cost and are there any discounts for students?
Thank you,
Ana.
